Leaf [1]. Etched title (Il uero modo et ordine per dissegnar tvtte le parti et membra del corpo hvmano), with arms of Cesare d'Este and dedication to him, and with the imprint: Venetia : Apresso l'Sadeler, 1608. This is the title of Fialetti's Petit livre de desseins as described by Bartsch (198), rather than that of his Grand livre (208), to which the copy as a whole corresponds -- Leaf [2]. Etched dedication to Giovanni Grimani with his arms, (209) in Bartsch's description of the Grand livre -- Leaf [10]. Etched title (Tutte le parti del corpo hvmano diuiso in piu pezzi), the title proper in Bartsch's description of the Grand livre de desseins (208). It is signed in the plate: Iu. Sadeler exc
Of the 40 etched ill., leaf [3] depicts a drawing class in an artist's studio, the first of 2 studio scenes given by Bartsch under Le grand livre de desseins (210-211). It has Fialetti's monogram at lower left, together with the numbers A2 and 208 (the title leaf from Bartsch's Petit livre that precedes it has an A at upper right). Leaves [4]-[9] depict facial features. They are numbered at lower left A.3-A.8, and at upper right 1-4, [unnumbered], 5. Leaves [11]-[18] depict complete faces. They are numbered at lower left B.1-B.8 (the additional title leaf that precedes this sequence has a B at upper right). Numbering at upper right has been effaced on leaves [11]-[15], but [16]-[18] are numbered 7-9. Leaves [19]-[26] depict whole heads. They are numbered at lower left C.1-C.8, at at upper right 10-16, 32. Leaves [27]-[34] depict hands, arms and legs. They are numbered at lower left D.1-D.8, at at upper right 17-20, 25-26, 31, 23. Leaves [35]-[41] depict feet and torsos. They are numbered at lower left E.1-E.7, and at upper right 24, 21-22, 27-30. Leaves [42] and [43] are religious scenes. They are inscribed in the plate "Palma fece," and are numbered at lower left E.8 and E.9
Library's c. 2 consists of only [34] leaves (the last blank). Leaf [1] is the title from the Grand livre de desseins as described by Bartsch (Tutte le parti del corpor hvmano diuiso in piu pezzi). Leaves [2]-[33] correspond to leaves [3]-[43] in c. 1, except that there is no additional title leaf, and the 8 plates numbered at lower left C.1-C.8 are wanting. Leaves [3]-[34] of c. 2 are hand numbered 1-40 in brown ink at the upper right-hand corner of the sheet. The numbers 15-22 that presumably appeared on plates numbered C.1-C.8 of course are not present. Copy 2 is in a loose paper wrapper, with a brief handwritten description of the piece in French on its p. [1], apparently by a dealer
Library's c. 2 inscribed on t.p. in purple ink by Andrea Onufrio to Sidney J.A. Churchill
